GQ recently announced that singer-actor Justin Timberlake was crowned 2013’s Man Of The Year, and Killer Fashion agrees 100%! Justin’s year has been an amazing one and it hasn’t even ended yet. JT has gifted us with an über talented album, The 20/20 Experience, been and gone on tour (I saw him in the Phoenix Park, Dublin this past summer), collaborated & played concerts with the King of Rap that is Jay Z, hosted SNL and Timberweek on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, performed an outstanding set at the VMAs (and brought out *NSYNC), starred in Runner Runner alongside Ben Affleck & Gemma Arterton, released a second 2013 album and has been on numerous Best Dressed lists all year. Read on for Justin’s evolving fashion style and details on his biggest achievements this year.
The 20/20 Experience
The 20/20 Experience, released in March 2013, was Justin’s comeback album after 6 years’ music hiatus. The 12-track album plays for just under 80 minutes, and every single song is unique to the next. JT co-wrote and co-produced every track too, and upon release it entered the Top 10 charts in almost every country. He teased the album prior to its debut with Suit & Tie (feat. Jay Z) in January, and eventually released the video with on Valentine’s Day. The cinematography of the video, filmed by famous cinematographer Matthew Libatique, helped shape the album and presented us with a new style for JT. He also performed at the Grammy Awards with Jay Z. Since then, he released Mirrors and Tunnel Vision as singles with accompanying videos, and has won & been nominated for a handful of music awards throughout the year, some of which are still pending. In September Justin released The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2, his second album of 2013 and the immediate follow up to the former album. Prior to its release, he repeated buzz with Take Back The Night. The 20/20 Experience Tour & Legends of the Summer Tour
Following the success of the album, Justin announced the The 20/20 Experience Tour. It kicked off in Dublin on July 10th, which is the concert I attended with Karl! He played a 2.5 hour-set, chatting with the crowd, playing the piano, a cappella and even rapping a bit. Expect dancing, a full band, a lot of reminiscing, old and new material, and a generally great show. The tour spans an entire year, from July 2013 to August 2014. Find tickets to The 20/20 Experience Tour near you.
JT didn’t stop there though; he teamed up with the King of Rap for the Legends of the Summer Tour with Jay Z. This special tour only took place in North America this past July & August, with one show in London corresponding with the first opening dates of Justin’s solo tour in Ireland & United Kingdom. Together JT & JZ played 14 shows mixing the set list between both artists’ hit songs and fan favourites. The shows and performances proved to be nostalgic, full of screaming singing-along diehard fans and to describe it in one word: EPIC. They even coordinated outfits on stage. MTV Video Music Awards 2013
There were two big moments for Justin at this year’s VMAs. The first was that epic medley performance, where JT performed a selection of his best songs in a 16-minute set. He even surprised us all with a mini piece with *NSYNC, that made every young woman swoon. The second moment for JT was winning the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for his music videography and career achievements. Jimmy Fallon presented the award after the medley performance, and JT’s acceptance speech was an honest & grateful one. Watch the full medley performance & acceptance speech here.
Man of the Year
As mentioned, GQ have named Justin Timberlake as 2013’s Man of the Year recipient. The magazine’s journalist, Amy Wallace, sat down with JT in Memphis to chat about all of his said achievements, the badmouthing JT received about his film Runner Runner with Ben Affleck & Gemma Arterton and also how critics say his second album, The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2, should have stayed on the demo shelf. Read the interview online here.
But in Killer Fashion’s eyes Justin Timberlake is deserving of the Man of the Year title because of all of the above, and that he stuck to his musical guns and delivered a new era of JT. His fashion sense has upped its game since 2007, and more so since 2001 and that awful matchy-matchy denim attire he wore to that year’s AMAs with then-girlfriend Britney Spears. If you want to dress like the now-classy JT, check my Steal His Style post. So now let’s take a look at Justin’s style evolution over the years.
