Best Dressed at CFDA Fashion Awards 2014

In April it was announced that Rihanna would be this year’s CFDA Fashion Icon of the Year 2014 recipient, and I posted on my favourite Riri red carpet moments to reminisce. On Monday night the Council of Fashion Designers of America event took place in Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City, and my what a beautiful evening it was; full of fabulous fashion choices. Rihanna looked truly wonderful, channeling a 1920s vibe, but some of her fellow singers,d actresses and the designers also stood out on the red carpet. So let’s see who made Killer Fashion’s Best Dressed list.

Rihanna: CFDA Fashion Icon of the Year 2014

Adam Selman created this amazing gown for Rihanna, the award recipient. Channeling 1920s glamour, this risqué features a scooped neckline and an open back, and was covered in over 230,000 Swarovski crystals! The dress was rather sheer, and in true Rihanna style, the Bajan beauty went sans bra and wore nude coloured thong briefs, leaving very little to the imagination. She wore matching evening gloves as well as a headscarf, and a soft pink fur boa-like shrug. Rihanna also styled the look with two cocktail rings & earrings by Jacob and Co and Paul Morelli, dark smokey eyes and a sheer nude lip. Although she does look super sexy and obviously opted for scandalous, I do wish she’d worn a nude coloured bodysuit under, although I don’t actually mind her bare butt!

Black Beauties

Actress Brie Larson was all smiles in her black & gold Diane von Furstenberg look. Her customized gold star printed gown featured a plunging neckline and sheer capped sleeves, which Brie styled with a DvF ‘Evil Eye’ handbag. She opted for Old Hollywood waves to the side and dewy makeup.

One of my favourites, Olivia Wilde, looked absolutely wondrous on the night. The new mammy chose to wear a vintage black, fringed look by Mollie Parnis. The asymmetrical dress was very flattering on the actress. (This particular number had first been worn by fellow actress Anjelica Huston at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival!) Olivia matched black with black in Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudist’ sandals, an art deco clutch, with curled hair and her classic cat eye makeup.

Like fellow Olivia, Olivia Palermo also wore black but by Ann Taylor. Her fur and fringed look is an interesting choice for a warm summer’s evening, but still a fashionable choice. Her skirt & sweater ensemble had contrasting textures, which worked in each other’s favours, that Olivia wore with black Aquazzura ‘Madison’ feather-accented sandals and a black Lulu McGuinness ‘Lips’ clutch. Smokey eyes and nude lips finished the look.

Top supermodel Coco Rocha went all out for the event, donning a classy black & white number by Christian Siriano. Her theatrical 1960s vibe featured an off-the-shoulder bodice & sleeves with Celtic-like embroidery on the skirt. To literally top it off, Coco wore a Heather Huey hat, slicked back hair and a dark plum lip. Just epic!

Chanel Iman joined her fellow models and wore a black bead embellished dress by Monique Lhuillier. Her low v-cut dress featured sheer sleeves with beaded strings, cut outs on the back and structured detailing on the bodice too. Chanel kept her styling classy with a chic updo, cat eyes and a nude lip.

Joan Smalls also joined in the dark hues look, donning a navy flowy cut out dress by Prabal Gurung. The triangular cut out on the abs and the Angelina leg gave off plenty sexiness for this demure dress. Joan teamed her look with voluminous hair & bangs, metallic lace up sandals, minimal jewels and smokey eyes.

Metallic Madness

Solange also looked as though she went back in time, wearing Calvin Klein Collection in a very Diana Ross-esque style. Her shiny embellished pewter silver gown was simplistic without being boring. Its low v-cut neckline and low-cut back and frizzed out afro showcased plenty of oomph, accented perfectly by her matte candy pink lipstick and barely-there makeup. Beautiful!

Thea Andrews opted for a shiny silver metallic dress for the occasion in vintage Catherine Malandrino. Her gathered and ruched v-cut liquid dress was very figure-hugging and showed off the TV presenter’s great curves, without being kitsch. A chic updo & cat eyes provided the perfect finish.

Naomi Campbell attended with fellow Brit supermodel, Tyson Beckford. The legendary model wore a low v-cut shimmery dress by Marc Jacobs, with metallic embellishment from top to toe. She kept to her long locks with Old Hollywood waves and added dazzling jewels to finish.

Rachel Zoe naturally wore her own designs to the awards, donning an asymmetrical textured gown that cinched in at the waist. The metallic green & black dress also featured a capped shoulder on the one full sleeve, though it looked as though it was too big on the designer. She styled her blonde hair to the side, holding a metallic gold clutch in one hand and wore a chunky bangle in the other.

Bold in Berry

One of my favourite looks was Bridget Moynahan in her vibrant textured look by designer Lela Rose. Her sweetheart strapless gown was perfect for the evening with its structured pleated detailing giving it the full skirt look. Bridget kept the rest chic, with an updo and dewy makeup and Jennifer Fisher jewels. Love it!

Busy Philipps chose to wear a red-hot look in her Honor choice. This frilled high neck dress is an altered version to the runway, opting for no sleeves, it cinches in at the waist which suits Busy’s statuesque shape to a tee. Irene Neuwirth designed her one-of-a-kind white-gold necklace that’s set with pink opal flower carvings, rose-cut diamonds and diamond pavé, which hung low on the actress’ front.

Alessandra Ambrosio wore a red-hot look in Nonoo. Her strapless gown features a structured bodice and a crossover ribbon at the back, which she accessorized with Jennifer Fisher jewels. Slicked back hair showed off the Brazilian Victoria’s Secret model’s natural beauty and was bang-on for this look.

Hilary Rhoda joined her VS Angels, in a peachy pink J. Mendel dress. Her sheer lace embroidered gown featured a plunging neckline and a train too, which she wore with red lipstick and dazzling accessories including the Jimmy Choo clutch.

Chrissy Teigen went for a mini dress with the caped jacket look, looking hot in Rachel Roy. Her lace overlay dress was the perfect for the leggy model, which she styled with a chic coral blazer over the shoulders, nude heels, a Rodo clutch and Jennifer Fisher jewels. Love it!

Supermodel Heidi Klum stepped out in a melon-orange gown by Donna Karan. This soft pastel hue was lovely on Heidi, and the layered halter dress was fuss-free as she styled the look with a simple half up-half down do and subtle Lorraine Schwartz jewellery.

Green Is Good but Blue Is Better

Blake Lively opted for a 1960s style, donning a Michael Kors mini dress with all-over floral sequins and scalloped hemlines. Blake opted for pink suede Cadadei platforms, chunky bangles & hoop earrings by Lorraine Schwartz, and a super voluminous Barbarella style hairdo styled with a satin hairband. Although this look is gorgeous, I wish Blake opted for more red carpet than a summer carpet look.

Actress Emmy Rossum chose an olive & black attire to the awards, wearing a J. Mendel pleated gown, that featured a sheer beaded detailing on the bust insert, cut outs on the waist and black trims. She teamed the look with a J. Mendel clutchand simpleblack heels by Manolo Blahnik for J. Mendel. A crimped updo and chic makeup completed the look.

Beth Behrs blew me away in her Alice + Olivia two-piece. Her green textured crop top and full waterfall skirt ensemble was beyond beautiful, especially with the skirt’s black satin lining popping through. She wore matching designer black cross strap heels and a sparkly embellished clutch to finish, styling her hair in a voluminous updo, dewy makeup and kohl-rimmed eyes. I love it from head to toe, it’s just perfect!

Legendary model Iman was also in attendance, in a flowy Juan Carlos Obando gown, which was tied together with a black sash to contrast with the cobalt & turquoise blues. A chic ponytail, gold pendant necklace and hoop earrings completed the fashionista’s look.

Jenna Lyons opted for a mix of colours donning a blue blazer with black lapel detailing, white fishnet top and floral printed trousers for that chic & sophisticated look. She styled the look with bronze pumps, a dark orange clutch and slicked back hair. Tres cool, Jenna.

White Hot

Sophia Bush wore a cream look on the night, wearing one of Killer Fashion’s favourite designers, Marchesa. Her floral laser-cut dress featured a scalloped hemline with all-over crystal embellishment. She teamed the dress with Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudist’ sandals, a heavy metal Dannijo collar necklace, side curls and red lipstick to match her red mani-pedi. I love everything but that necklace!

Jessica Stam opted for a jumpsuit by Giulietta. Her leggy look featured peplum and keyhole detailing, which she styled with pewter bangles and hoop earrings by Lorraine Schwartz, a slicked back updo and bronze smokey eyes. Being sexy & sultry in white is just something else.

Model Liya Kebede wore a two-piece in her midi skirt & shirt ensemble by Wes Gordon. The graphic on the skirt and slightly open shirt provided plenty of sophistication in comparison to her sexy looks model friends. White sandals, a Valextra envelope clutch and barely-there makeup completed her look.

Menswear

In the men’s roundup of who looked best, Di Mondo really blew me away in his white & black suit and that Swarovski Crystal veil; Tyson Beckford looked dashing in his black suit and loafers sans socks; actor James Marsden wore a black suit with pristine trims while Tom Ford wore his own designs with oversized lapels and also was awarded the prestigious Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award; Sebastian Stan opted for a shiny textured blazer, black slacks and black & white sneakers for a youthfully cool look; and Cameron Silver splashed onto the scene in an orange blazer, black pants & shoes and bow tie to match.
