September 4th was the official first day of the Dublin Fashion Festival, and to really kick things off the Young Designer of the Year Show took place in its now-traditional spot at Bank of Ireland, College Green. The Evoke.ie Fashion Bus was also at the venue, inviting guests to come on board for mini makeovers and a view like no other. The mild evening was attended by many of Dublin’s finest, both the public and VIPs, with many passers by stopping & spectating from the gates. The runway was built up in the middle of Bank of Ireland, with a straight catwalk for the models to strut their stuff, with smoke machines & lights for extra fun. The style of those attending was also beautiful. Ladies pulled out all the stops; monochrome was back again as a big trend on the night as were full skirts, leather and all white outfits.
Venue: Bank of Ireland, College Green
What I wore: Quiz Clothing, Glitz N Pieces, Michael Kors, Gucci & Adele Marie
Highlights: The Evoke.ie Fashion Bus; what the finalist designers themselves wore; the fashion shows were truly fantastic; Clyde Carroll’s speech before the show praising Dublin and Irish fashion; how the venue was transformed into such a spectacle!
Last year’s winner Claire Lynam, beat the stiff competition with her impressive white sculptural dress, which was on show in the middle if the catwalk for all to see. She then went on to work in River Island as a design assistant and since has been designing non-stop. All of this year’s finalists’ designs were spectacular, bold & daring but also sexy & feminine. The 2014 contenders were:
- Ciaran Gormley – University of Ulster, Belfast
- Sophie Wallace – NCAD, Dublin
- Claire McElduff – University of Ulster, Belfast
- Sookyoung Song – ChongAng Fashion School, Korea
- Bríd McDonald – Griffith College, Dublin
- Geraldine Breen – Mallow College of Design and Tailoring, Cork
- Gwen Cunningham – NCAD, Dublin
- Caroline Martin – Limerick School of Art and Design, Limerick
- Cliodhna Scully – Griffith College, Dublin
- Rebecca Kenny – Colaiste Dhulaigh, Dublin
- Marian Witcher – Dublin Institute of Design, Dublin
- Suzanne Stroker – Dublin Institute of Design, Dublin
The judges had some tough decisions to make, but came to a unanimous decision and the Young Designer of the Year 2014 Award went to Ciaran Gormley and his intricately royal blue knitted dress. Many congratulations to him!
Extra fashion show showcasing more Irish designers. The second fashion show consisted of Irish designers Lennon Courtney, Francis Campelli, Arnotts Collection by Orla Kiely as well as those in Brown Thomas, Clerys, The Kilkenny Shop and Design Centre. It was a spectacular show, with hair by Toni & Guy, makeup by No7 and 1st Option models. 98FM’s Steve Cooper DJed the whole set, and all the ladies & gents left the venue with smiling faces.
