On Sunday night, the annual American Music Awards took place in downtown Los Angeles. The AMAs are one of my favourite music award ceremonies, and really kick off the season swimmingly! And this year’s red carpet arrivees brought their fashion A-game to the table with head-turning, mouth-dropping and leg-flaunting choices. Ooh how I love when the ladies really do it right. So who exactly made the Killer Fashion Best Dressed list?
My favourite rapper Iggy Azalea looked divine in a black power suit, teaming it with a frizzed out ponytail and cat eye makeup. She changed into a metallic suit for her performance of Fancy with Charli XCX and then a leotard bodysuit Beg For It, which you can watch here; and then closing the show she performed Booty with Jennifer Lopez, which you can watch here. Iggy also won Best Hip-Hop Album for “The New Classic”!
Fellow rapper Nicki Minaj continued her demure red carpet look in a knit mini dress by Alexander Wang. Her dress featured cut outs on the waist with a pleated skirt, that she teamed with simple Manolo Blahnik pumps, poker straight hair, winged liner and a nude pink lipstick. Nicki later performed Bed of Lies with Skylar Gray, which you can watch here.
Singer Selena Gomez walked the red carpet in a charcoal Armani Privé strapless & backless gown that really showed off her svelte figure. The dress featured contrasting black velvet panels on the waist and down the front of the skirt, which she wore with chunky gold bracelets, tangerine drop earrings that matched her lipstick and a slick ponytail. Selena later performed The Heart Wants What It Wants, which you can watch here, wearing a custom soft tulle dress by Giorgio Armani.
Joining her friends in the front row, model Karlie Kloss attended wearing a bustier crop top & midi skirt in black metallic by Pamela Rolland. Her mid-length hair was styled into tousled curls, with which she wore subtle smokey eye makeup and nude pink lipstick. Standing beside BFF Taylor Swift, they kind of look like twins…! Silver Christian Louboutin pumps and an Emm Kuo clutch completed her look.
Country singer and Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale looked sweet in her Vera Wang mini dress. The petite starlet wore an embellished LBD with a fringed hem, with which she styled jewellery by Jacob & Co, EFFY Jewelry and EF Collection. Black barely-there sandals, a crimped do and vampy dark red lipstick completed her look.
Joining this wearing black, British singer Charli XCX attended in Vivienne Westwood, donning an Old Hollywood glamour-style gown with matching tresses. Her off-the-shoulder dress was very cleavage baring, which she wore with Dionia Orcini rings, dramatic cat eyes, and a red pout to finish.
Pulling out the sexy stops, Fergie welcomed her ‘Angelina leg’ in this thigh high cut Halstone Heritage black dress. She wore a gold metallic belt with Anthony Vacarello x Versus metallic tall sandals that complimented her long mermaid waves. Fergie later performed L.A. Love (La La) on the show, which you can watch here.
Skylar Gray opted for an all white ensemble, donning a laid back tres cool cropped top with a sheer shirt, baggy trousers, a white ‘Woodrat’ beanie and high top sneakers. The tattooed singer later performed Bed of Lies with Nicki Minaj, which you can watch here.
Taylor Schilling went for black & white on he red carpet in her Vionnet asymmetrical mini dress that also featured peplum on the waist. She added a flash of red with Brian Atwood pumps and a Lee Savage box clutch.
Kate Beckinsale looked white hot in her KaufmanFranco choice. Easily one of the best dressed, the actress stunned in this plunging cut out column dress, which she wore with a serpent choker necklace by Bvlgari. The white gold diamond pavé necklace added all the sparkle needed, as Kate wore no other jewellery but held a Lee Savage clutch, with smokey eyes and a pulled back do to complete her look.
Young rapper Becky G wore a white sequin mini dress with structured mesh panels. The LWD was worn with white, black & bronze panelled pumps, a pulled back high ponytail and pink Covergirl lipstick.
Joining the monochrome trend, model Gigi Hadid wore a white femme suit with black, turquoise and embellished panels on the trousers that she wore sans shirt opting for a black lace balconette bra and finishing with Dolce & Gabbana heels. Sexy but still playing it cool.
The femme suit seems to be trending as singer Jessie J also attended wearing Prada with Saint Laurent shoes, a Gucci bag and Jacob & Jason jewels. Poker straight hair, smokey eyes and a nude lip gloss completed her lovely look. Jessie later performed Bang Bang with Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj, which you can watch here.
Actress Olivia Munn opted for a gold lamé Lanvin plunging gown with a matching high split accented by a pewter waistbelt. Black satin pointed ankle strap heels, jewels by Melissa Kaye, Norman Silverman, and EFFY with a dark lip with pulled back hair finished her look.
Zendaya also wore gold lamé, channelling the 1970s in her Georgine ensemble. Her brushed metallic trench coat was left open revealing the mint-green leather bandeau, which she wore with the palazzo pants and Gucci heels. A tight curled but frizzed out fro and gold, dewy makeup completed this look beautifully.
Also opting for gold & glitzy was singer/actress Jordin Sparks. She arrived in a plunging wrap dress by Halstone Heritage with a thigh high split. The sequined dress was worn with tight ombré curls, Dolce & Gabbana sandals and an abundance of jewellery.
Supermodel Heidi Klum opted for a black & metallic pink cut out number to turn heads her way. Wearing Versace on the night, the halter crop top and matching skirt are an interesting take on runway to red carpet, though I wish she hadn’t opted for those Lucite heels. Slicked back and smokey eyes finished this look.
A Splash of Colour
Before the show started, Taylor Swift walked the red carpet in a green & nude mesh Michael Kors gown that featured a mesh semi-circle on the waist. The column dress looked fab on the tall singer, which she simply styled with waves, big lashes & bronzed smokey eyes and a pink lipstick. Taylor opened the show performing her new single Blank Page, which you can watch, donning a bronze & sheer glittering gown by Yosef Aljasmi with a leather skirt that ripped off revealing the fringed mini skirt features underneath. Taylor also won the first Dick Clarke Award of Excellence, congratulations TayTay!
My beloved Jhené Aiko turned heads in her dark red brocade gown by Alice + Olivia. The T-back dress glimmered & glistened on the red carpet with her Amrapli statement necklace and Rauwolf box clutch, finished with an über cut braided updo and her signature eye makeup. Gorgeous!
Jennifer Lopez looked fab in a dusty pink silk halter gown by Reem Acra. Her slicked back do & dark smokey eyes looked great with the criss-cross revealing dress, along with her glittery Christian Louboutin heels and clutch by Oroton. J.Lo later performed Booty with Iggy Azalea, which you can watch here.
Rita Ora looked truly fresh in a mermaid gown, donning Zac Posen. Her lemon yellow choice featured an inverted-v structured bodice and a sweeping train that Rita wore with a structure topknot, yellow eyeshadow and big eyelashes.
Always up for some fun, actress Elizabeth Banks wore a colourful mini by Peter Pilotto. Her embellished & laser cut leather dress featured intriguing textures that looked great against her pale complexion, which she teamed with a matching coral lipstick, sideswept hair and sculptured Nicholas Kirkwood heeled sandals, a Reece Hudson clutch and a Casa Reale statement ring.
TV presenter Giuliana Rancic looked great in her blue & white asymmetrical Alex Perry dress. It featured a fully sequined panel along the neckline, was one sleeved and had a sweeping cut on the skirt to show off her Christian Louboutin shoes. The blonde straight bob was teamed with Jack Vartanian earrings, a Rauwolf clutch and Pasquale Bruni rings. Gorgeous!
Miss America Kira Kazantsev attended too, in a custom made dark blue embellished crop top and high-waisted full skirt ensemble from Tony Bowls. She wore impressive jewellery by Erickson Beamon with straight hair, red lipstick and dramatic smoke eyes, which I wish she had toned down.
Notable Mentions & Menswear
One Direction won big on the night taking home Artist of the Year, Favourite Band, Duo or Group – Pop/Rock and Favourite Album – Pop/Rock. Congratulations guys! They later performed Night Changes, which you can watch here.
Sam Smith also was a lucky star at the AMAs, winning Favourite Male Artist – Pop/Rock and also performed Not The Only One right after winning, which you can watch here.
I’m not sure what singer Bleona Qereti was thinking…but this is just not acceptable, especially for the AMAs! She wore a crystal mesh dress with black pavé pasties and a silver crystal thong, leaving nothing to the imagination. I expect this from Rihanna or Miley Cyrus…and even then it’s not too great. I reckon Bleona just wants the attention. You know what they say; “any publicity is good publicity.” Hmm…
