Gosh it seems like forever since I’ve written up a Best Dressed post, so thank goodness for last night’s MTV Video Music Awards 2016 (August 28), that were held at the iconic Madison Square Garden, New York City. As we all know, the fashion and the antics of the VMAs are infamous, and it excites us all to watch what will happen each year, whether we like to admit it or not. This year was a bit of a funny one, as no one specific host presented the show after last year’s Miley Cyrus takeover, but the production still promised us a great night of entertainment and award-giving. But first there is the red carpet glamour (okay white carpet), so let’s get on with it and reveal this year’s Killer Fashion Best Dressed List!
The Best Dressed
Is it any wonder that Queen B looked so goddess-like in this minty hue? Beyoncé wowed everyone as she stepped out in this ice queen-like gown by designer Francesco Scognamiglio that featured lines of sparkling gems & sequins on a sheer nude overlay with feather details. The exaggerated shoulders and corset-bodice were topped with a high neckpiece and wings that came out above her shoulders in a feathery flurry. She added During the show, Beyoncé also performed hit songs from her album “Lemonade”, which you can watch below. Beyoncé also won 7 VMAs on the night, including Breakthrough Long Form Video for ‘Lemonade’, Best Choreography for ‘Sorry’, Best Female Video for ‘Hold Up’, and Video of the Year for ‘Formation’. Congratulations Bey!
The Sassy Separates
Top model Joan Smalls attended in a sultry leather crop top and black flared trousers look by Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh for the MTV VMAs. The criss-cross neck added a bit of statement that worked well sans necklace, accented subtly by a Jennifer Fisher ring.
Attending with designer Jeremy Scott, model Stella Maxwell wore head-to-toe Moschino. The tall blonde showed off some skin in this cropped co-ordinates look, with flared trousers and features colourful Mexicana patterns with mirror embellishments & embroidery, teamed with matching platforms. I love that she opted for pink smokey eyes and soft pink lips, with a high ponytail and minimal accessories.
Ariana Grande wore a teeny tiny bardot bandeau, (what a thing to say), designed by Alexander Wang. The lace top was stled with high-waisted flared trousers and a thin choker. Dewy makeup with big lashes, minimal jewels and her signature ponytail rounded up her red carpet look. During the show, Ariana also performed “Side By Side” with Nicki Minaj, which you can watch below.
Carly Aquinilo looked lovely in her nude champagne silk dress, with the wrap detail of the skirt, the relaxed bodice and the bow sash at the waist, which was beautifully teamed with nude barely there sandals and a foldover clutch. A spiral choker pavé necklace with a statement ring and a wispy updo completed her look.
Presenter and model Heidi Klum attended wearing this long sleeved mini dress by Roberto Cavalli. She teamed her open-back look with Giusepe Zanotti sandals and a half-up half-down ponytail hairstyle.
Rihanna had such a great night at he VMA’s this year. Not only did she perform a medley of her big hits, she was also honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and for her finale, Riri wore a stunning silk jacket gown by Alexandre Vauthier Couture. The oversized dress was cinched in with a studded waistbelt, teamed with slicked back hair & diamond earrings. Upon presenting her with the aforementioned award, Drake confessed his love & pride to Riri during a very sweet speech after her epic performance. Watch Rihanna’s absolutely amazing performances below the gallery.
A Splash of Colour
Stepping out in a red tea dress, Carly Steel attended donning this asymmetrical neckline midi to the awards. The dress featured a bow detail on the shoulder, with deep pleats on the skirt, teamed with silver metallic peeptoe sandals. Red lipstick, strong eye makeup and a half-braided updo ponytail rounded up her awards attire.
Nicki Minaj joined her fiancé Meek Mill on the red carpet, wearing a sexy navy dress by Bao Tranchi. The petite brunette attended the VMAs in this peekaboo cutout dress with an exaggerated fishtail skirt and sheer panels that sure made us question if she decided to attend commando! Rounding up her look, the rapper added Harry Kotlar diamond cluster earrings and a diamond ring by Le Vian, alongside her engagement ring, with sleek straight hair, black eyeliner & exaggerated lashes and nude pink lips to finish. During the show, Nicki also performed “Side By Side” with Ariana Grande, which you can watch above.
Donning a red wide-legged jumpsuit, Tinashe looked wondrous on the red carpet as she attended the VMAs. The relaxed look featured an attached cami top that had a cut out on the waist, and was styled with a neckscarf, both of which fell to the floor. A selection of gold jewels, a bouffant upstyle and dark eyes completed the singer’s look.
Top model Taylor Hill looked fabulous in her sparkling pink & sheer choice by Jeremy Scott for Moschino. The glitter-clad dress featured an asymmetrical neckline with one-shoulder strap, with peekoboo sheer sections and a sexy super high asymmetrical cut on the skirt that showed off her strappy sandals perfectly. A wispy hairbun, with cat eyeliner, a pale coral lipstick very minimal jewels rounded up this statement outfit.
Actress Hailee Steinfeld was also in attendance last night donning a mini dress from Balmain. The tall brunette wore the brand’s signature style with its column fit, sharp shoulders, slightly cinched waist and mini length, choosing one that featured both sunset and ocean blue colours. The embroidery of this look added sass, while her metallic gold barely there sandals by Giuseppe Zanotti complimented her yellow gold jewellery, contrasting with her long dark brown tresses which was finished with a quiff.
Amber Rose stepped out in a relaxed fit femme suit, that she wore sans shirt but with a lace bra on show. The buzzcut bombshell simply added mirrored sunglasses, scarlet red lipstick and jewels by Borgioni and Le Vian to complete.
IT girl Hailey Baldwin attended the VMAs this year, donning a black sheer embellished jumpsuit by Georges Chakra. The blonde beauty added Giuseppe Zanotti sandals to her look, alongside a collection of black & pavé rings, hoop earrings, strong brows and a soft smokey finish.
Zara Larsson was another favourite look of mine, as she was ultra glam in this vampy-like mini dress. Her VMAs debut, the Swedish singer easily looked the part in this black & teal velvet dress which featured a v-sweetheart neckline with off-the-shoulder puff sleeves and peplum detail on the waist. Black peeptoe ankle strap heels, wet look slicked back hair, emerald creeper earrings and a selection of rings this is one gorgeous finish. Just beautiful!
Holland Roden was in attendance donning a white caped jumpsuit, that featured a wrap bust detail on the bodice. The brunette kept to her monochrome, opting for white barely there sandals and a white clutch to finish, completing the look with a dark berry lip. mini.
Singer Tove Lo joined the party wearing white, as she waked down the red carpet in this relaxed mini. It featured an off-the-shoulder sleeve with a slight oversize fit, that she wore with rose gold metallic sneakers by Reebok, cocktail rings and a wavy-haired ponytail with perfectly applied red lipstick.
Quevenzhane Wallis also attended in white, as she stepped out for the VMAs in a tiered white lace gown, that was both long-sleeved and long in length. Teaming an intricate layered bead, pearl & embellished necklace with the dress, the young actress rounded up her look with black lace brogues, simple makeup and an updo.
We’ve all seen the moments that make VMAs history, that we won’t forget about for years. And yes, the VMAs are notorious for being the place to wear kooky fashion and have a bit of fun, but sometimes the stars take it that bit too far…
